Death of a Mercenary: Act 1 - Scene 4

ACT I- SCENE 4

LA TASCA CLUB -- HALF HOUR LATER

COUPLES walk to the dance floor and slow dance a bolero in dimmed lights.

SEAN, JIM, and HELENA continue their conversation at the bar.

A BARMAID clears empty bottles and spent glasses from Camacho’s table leaving behind a fresh bottle of Don Q and clean glasses. The card game has ended with Camacho the big winner. The players get up; some to relieve themselves while Camacho flirts and enjoys the attentions of his female entourage.

CAMACHO
(Shouting over at Sean)

¡Oye gringo!

JULIO gains Sean’s attention and points towards Camacho.

SEAN
(Robert de Niro impression)

Hey, Camacho! You talking to me?

CAMACHO
(All warmth and charm)

¡Si, Roberto de Niro! I’m talking to you. We have an empty seat. You feeling lucky tonight?

SEAN

Give me a minute and I’ll show you!

HELENA
(Serious, concerned)

Sean, stay out of it. He only wants to make trouble.

SEAN
(Finishing his beer)

Baby, don’t you worry. Jim will keep an eye on me. Besides, the man himself will be here any minute now.

JIM

He’s late. Where is he?

SEAN
(Unconcered)

I’ve no idea. (teasing Helena) Could be that some other señorita has need of his services and, on account that he’s been deprived of your lovely company for some time, he felt obligated to bestow his gift.

HELENA
(Peeved icy look)

If he is, that’s not the only thing he’ll find himself deprived off.

SEAN
(Making a face)

Ooh! Why are all you Latin beauties so jealously sadistic?

HELENA
(Dismissive hand gesture)

Swine should be humbled when women have no more use for them.

SEAN

Okay, lady! That does it! From now on we are keeping our relationship strictly professional. No more begging for my body!

HELENA
(With a purr and a caress)

!Ay, si, papi! (then, with a slap of the wrist and a wicked grin) In your dreams!

SEAN

Listen to her Jim, she’s suffering from denial, (kissing her hand and sighing) but there might still be hope for her. (Helena purrs a soft laugh of delight)

CAMACHO
(Impatient)

Gringo! Are you coming or not?

SEAN

Well, I better get going. The natives are calling and getting restless.

SEAN pulls out money from his shirt pocket and drops it on the counter.

JIM
(Serious)

Remember Sean, we have an early call.

HELENA (Surprised)

When are you guys leaving?

JIM

Five in the morning.

HELENA
(Dissapointed)

So soon…

SEAN

Oh, come now! We’ll be back before you have time to miss us, (at Jim) right buddy? (then, at Helena) How about a hug to remind you what a real man feels like?

HELENA
(Hugging him with affection)

¡Cuídate! [Take care!]

SEAN

You too. (at Jim) And you, old man, don’t worry. I’ll keep it short.

SEAN leaves and joins Camacho at the card table. CASIANO and FREDDIE join them in the game.

At the bar, HELENA and JIM sit in silence, without making eye contact. Helena looks sombre; having a bad feeling. She finishes her drink and turns to Jim, but before she could get a word out, he interjects.

JIM
(Staring into his glass)

Don’t say anything. It’s bad luck.

HELENA
(She looks away)

I better get going. (she opens her purse looking for money)

JIM
(Stopping her)

Nah, don’t. It’s on me.

HELENA
(Closing her purse)

Thanks. (then) After all these years, it doesn’t get any easier, does it?

JIM

Nope. In love and war, saying good bye never is.

HELENA

Tell Agustin I need to see him before he leaves. I’ll stay up.
(hugs and kisses) ¡Ciao, querido! ¡Cuídate!

JIM
(Softly)

Ciao.

HELENA exits , Jim’s eyes following her. Next, he checks on Sean.
Satisfied, he swings around to the counter and remains pensive for a few moments.

JIM
(Looking up, searching)

Julio! Un café con leche, por favor.
